The airport was built in the Chettinad region because the area had strong early aviation interest, especially from the Chettiar community, which helped pioneer flying club activity in India.The airstrip is closely associated with Chettinad’s early flying pioneers and later with Alagappa Chettiar’s Jupiter Airlines operations in the 1950s. The site is said to have been active from the 1930s, with flying club activity in that period and airline use around 1953.During World War II, it reportedly handled DC-3, Hawker Hurricanes, and Spitfires.Reports also mention government interest in reviving the site under aviation-development plans.
