The temple is widely regarded as a major Shiva shrine and is associated with ancient Tamil Saiva tradition, with references connecting it to old Pandya-era temple development and later renovation work by the Maruthu brothers.The temple complex is especially famous for its twin gopurams, large stone structures, temple tank, and the presence of multiple Shiva shrines within the same complex. Local tradition and heritage sources describe it as a very ancient site, and it is often called the “pride of Sivaganga Seemai” because of both its religious importance and its role in the region’s history.Kalaiyar Koil also has a strong freedom-struggle connection. It is closely linked with the rule of Muthu Vaduganathar, the resistance of the Maruthu brothers, and important events in the anti-British history of Tamil Nadu.
